Undulating ribbons of red velvet combine to form one of the most interesting flowers in the world of plants. During Dia de los Muertos these can be seen throughout Mexico. Their glow and characteristic shape enhance their beauty.

Randy, how beautiful!! They remind me of the rich, velvety Coxcomb flowers my pepere grew in his Victorian gardens. I wonder if they are a related species?

Yes, this is the cockscomb from old gardens and still grown today, but not seen nearly as often.

Randy, my first impression of these beautiful flowers was "velvet" and then I noticed your description,so you achieved a perfect result! Velvety, beautifully rich in so many exquisite shades of wine red,and such an unusual flower (to my eyes). The simplicity of your vase and ochre surround is the perfect backdrop. Love to view your floral works as much as your amazing landscapes! L/F
Rand Burns replied:
Jane, thank you for your splendid observation of these flowers! I am glad you visited and viewed them. So good to hear from you and thank you for the l/f!
Rand Burns replied:
I will add that these annual flowers are easily grown. In Mexico they are cultivated and used in dia de Los muertos (day of the dead) celebration. They make an excellent cut flower and are called rooster's comb here.
Kim Sy Ok
